How Can I Increase My Water Pressure?

Ultimately, the best way to increase your water pressure is to fix whatever is causing your low water pressure. However, if you don’t know what is causing your water pressure to be lower than it should, knowing how to fix it is difficult. Here are some possible fixes for you to consider:

  • Your Faucets – If your shower, sink, or tub faucets have scale buildup, it may be affecting the water coming out of them. Look to see if you notice any white, green, or reddish brown buildup on your faucet openings. If you notice any buildup, fill a bag with white vinegar or calcium/lime/rust remover solution and soak them until the scale can be scrubbed off.
  • Aerators – If your faucets look okay but aren’t letting water come out fully, remove your aerator and clean it like you would your faucet to remove and buildup and then replace them to see if that helps your water pressure.
  • Toilets – If you are experiencing low water pressure when you flush your toilet (i.e., weak flushing action and slow filling up) your toilets’ components or the toilets themselves may need to be replaced. As toilets age, their parts can wear out, making their operation slower and less effective. You can replace your toilet yourself or hire a plumber to do it for you. A plumber will be able to tell you if your toilet can be fixed or if it needs to be replaced.
  • Pipe Sizes and Fittings – If your water pressure has always been low as long as you have lived in your home, the problem may be with the underlying plumbing. A poorly plumbed house can use the wrong pipe sizes or fittings, unnecessarily restricting water flow. If this is the cause, a professional plumber will be able to identify this problem if the pipes in question are accessible in your basement. The only fix will be to replace the pipes with better sized and run them in a way that helps encourage better water pressure.
  • Clogging – If your pipes are sized correctly, the problem may actually be within. Clogged pipes can reduce water pressure. If you have hard water, live in an old home, or reside in an area with a higher sediment level in the water, your pipes may be clogged or experiencing buildup. A plumber can remove a pipe clog to improve your water pressure as well as install a water softener system to help you avoid these kinds of problems again in the future.
  • The Municipality – If you are on city water, it is possible that the problem is on their end. Advocating with your neighbors for the city to investigate the issue is going to be your best bet to get it fixed. However, if the city denies that there is an issue or can’t/won’t fix it, you may want to have a plumber install a water booster in your home to improve your water flow from what is coming in.
  • Your Well Pump – If you are on well water instead of city water, your well pump may be undersized or beginning to fail, resulting in less water being pumped up into your home. A well company can advise on the health of your well pump and install a new one if it needs to be replaced.
