Can a Valve be Replaced on a Water Heater or Do I Have to Buy a New One?

The drain valve on a water heater can wear out with or without regular preventative maintenance. If you have a leaking water heater valve, a professional plumber can fix that for you, or you can buy a new valve and replace it yourself if you’re handy. As a part, the valve itself is usually less than $40, but having the tools and skills needed to do it right the first time is where it’s usually helpful to bring in a licensed plumber.

If you plan on doing the water heater valve replacement yourself, follow the safety instructions for your specific model to ensure that you do not cause water damage inside your home, or injure yourself. Drain the water tank and then shut it down completely so it doesn’t try to turn on while you’re repairing it. If you have a gas water heater you will need to turn off the gas valve. If you have an electric water heater, turn the unit off at the breaker. Afterwards, remove the valve using the right tools so that you do not damage the unit itself. Bring the valve to your local hardware store to find a replacement for your specific water heater model. Install the new valve according to the instructions that are provided in your water heater manual or on the package of the valve itself. Then, follow the proper startup sequencing directions to refill the tank. As the tank fills and in the days following, check the valve regularly to ensure that your repair worked and there are no drips. If you still see water, it’s possible that the unit was actually leaking from elsewhere. Call a local plumber to come investigate where the water is coming from and determine if the unit needs to be replaced, or whether it can be repaired.

Remember, if you suspect that your water heater is cracked, turn it off immediately and call a licensed plumber to get it fixed. A cracked water tank can create a very dangerous situation for homeowners because hot water can leak out or the unit can explode when pressure builds up and is not properly contained.
