How to Find a Water Leak: Figuring Out Where the Water is Coming From

When you find water in your home, panic can set in. Stay calm and try to figure out where water is coming from using each of your senses (except taste!). Feel around to determine the extent of the water that you’ve discovered. This is especially important when water is on the floor because it’s easy for water to cover wide areas by running alongside baseboards, tile edges, hardwood grooves, or furniture. Essentially, where you found the water may not actually be anywhere near where it’s coming from. Try to trace the water back to the area it came from originally. If water is coming from behind a wall, under a floor, behind an appliance, or in a ceiling, feel around for an indication of how severe the water damage may be. Soft or spongy building materials can indicate that there is significant water hiding where you can’t see it. Look to determine if there are any signs of water damage that could indicate that this leak has been happening for a while. Next, turn off anything making noise and listen carefully for any hissing or whistling that could indicate where water is coming from.

Remember, the goal is just to gather as much information as you can to provide to the local plumber that you call to come out and fix the problem. The goal is not to solve the issue yourself with a quick fix or plumbing hack. Your objective is fact finding so you can provide the best information to a top-rated plumber to fix whatever has failed in your home.
