Replacing an Old Sink with a New Sink – Tips for Beginners

Drop-in sinks, pedestal sinks, and bowl sinks will all have their own installation challenges. However, these are some basic sink replacement steps regardless of the type of sink being installed:

  1. Turn off the water before beginning
  2. Lay down a towel or pad to cushion the area under your feet and body where you’ll be working
  3. Unscrew the pipe connections
  4. Remove any clips anchoring the sink to the counter
  5. Loosen any adhesive attaching the sink to the countertop surface
  6. Remove the old sink
  7. Feed the faucet through the hole in the sink and tighten it into place
  8. Apply silicone to the under edge of the new sink
  9. Set the new sink in the existing hole
  10. Attach anchor clips to hold the sink to the counter
  11. Reattach water lines to shut off valves
  12. Turn on the water and test it – look for any leaks or water backups

Depending on your existing plumbing setup, code requirements, and the location of the sink, you may want to call a local plumber to do the job for you. An experienced plumber can get the job done quickly, minimizing the risk of leaking later. Because plumbers are licensed, they will also take care of anything that is damaged during the sink installation, which is a huge benefit to homeowners who are less handy. The last thing you want is to cause damage to your plumbing that you’re financially responsible for fixing!
