Should a Plumber Replace Your Toilet?

Can you replace your own toilet? Absolutely. Should you? Well, that depends.

If you are especially handy and enjoy doing home improvement projects, or if you have previous plumbing experience, replacing your toilet will probably be very easy for you. Otherwise, you should probably have a plumber replace your toilet for you.

A lot can go wrong when replacing your own toilet and these common problem areas are things that plumbers can anticipate and adapt to on the fly to avoid causing damage to your home. For instance, when removing the toilet, it’s easy to have water leak out on your bathroom floor. (And if your toilet is damaged or old enough to need to be replaced, you can only imagine how pleasant that it!) Moving the toilet out of the space and out of your home is also tricky because toilets are heavy and old toilets always still have some water left inside them, adding to the weight. The last thing you want is to drop and old, wet, dirty toilet down your stairs or on your carpet on the way out of the house. A professional plumber is used to hauling toilets around and has the right technique to ensure that a mess won’t result.

Furthermore, when the new toilet is installed, local plumbers have the tools and expertise needed to get the new one in efficiently and effectively. They can likely do the job in a fraction of the time it would take you to do it and with better precision. This is especially important if there are any issues with your plumber that the toilet was hiding. For instance, if the wax o-ring is damaged, a plumber has the experience needed to spot that and know how to fix it, as well as the parts on the truck to get it done right then. If you’re doing it, you may be stuck headed to the hardware store and walking around for a while trying to figure out which parts you need to complete the job. Or worse yet, you may not notice the problem at all and get the new toilet seated and sealed on top of a problem that’s going to rear its ugly head later on down the road.
