How to Protect your Plumbing in the Winter

Winter weather and low temperatures can cause cold-related plumbing problems such as frozen pipes, broken pipes, drain blockages, toilet clogs, and backups. These are all serious plumbing problems that can cause major issues for homeowners. Before you find yourself needing to call an emergency plumber to come out and fix a major plumbing failure, it is wise to do everything you can to protect your plumbing. But how can you protect your pipes in the cold? Use these simple suggestions to keep your plumbing  in good working order even as temperatures drop:

  • Turn Up the Heat – Increasing the temperature in your home by even a degree or two can make a big difference when it comes to helping water flow through pipes.
  • Open Interior Doors and Vents – Keeping warm air flowing through all the rooms in your home can warm up pipes in these spaces even if they are within the walls. For pipes that flow through accessible areas, like under cabinets or in utility closets, open these up as well to warm up the area immediately around them as much as possible.
  • Let Water Trickle Out of Faucets – Keeping water moving can reduce the likelihood of freezing.
  • Wrap Pipes – Use pipe covers on pipes along exterior walls to add some insulation to your most vulnerable pipes.
  • Apply Gentle Heat to Freeze-Prone Pipes – If you have pipes that have frozen before, plan to periodically warm them up with a blow dryer or indoor-rated space heater other gentle source of heat to keep them warm enough that they won’t freeze. (Note: never create a burn risk or fire hazard by trying to heat pipes with something unsafe like a lighter or welding torch.)
  • Address Freezing Immediately – if you think you may have a frozen pipe, address it right away! Doing so can help stave off bigger problems in the future. A local plumber can come and try to unfreeze your pipe before further freezing occurs. The sooner you address a frozen pipe, the less likely you are to have a burst pipe due to frozen water expanding inside and breaking through.

Remember, no matter how ell prepared you are or how hard you try to avoid frozen pipes, you can’t control how your home was constructed or what the weather is going to do. There may be an instance where despite doing everything right, you still have a pipe freeze because of prolonged frigidly cold temperatures or because the area around your pipe was not properly insulated when the house was originally built. No matter the cause, if you have a frozen pipe, give us a call! We help homeowners deal with frozen pipes every winter and are ready to come fix your winter plumbing problem right away!
