The Most Common Winter Plumbing Problems

Frozen pipes are undoubtedly the most common plumbing problem to have in the winter because cold temperatures can wreak havoc, especially on older homes or businesses. Pipes can freeze either indoors or outdoors, with water spigots being an especially big cause for concern. Always disconnect hoses and connectors to get as much water out of spigots as possible before temperatures drop. If a spigot does freeze, use very warm (not but extremely hot or boiling) water to try to defrost it enough that you can get it open and drain the remaining water inside.

Winter months bring big holidays, which are typically accompanied by extra cooking. When kitchens are heavily utilized kitchen sinks take the brunt of the burden. Clogged kitchen drains and garbage disposals also see an uptick in the winter for this reason. If you have a clogged garbage disposal or sink or a broken garbage disposal, give a local plumber a call to get it fixed right away. A clogged sink in the kitchen is not only a headache, it’s also gross! Imagine having guests over with the disgusting smell of old food in your disposal hanging around in the space. No one wants that! Let an experienced plumber come and unclog your sink or replace your garbage disposal for you so you can get back to entertaining.

Water heaters also work harder in the winter months. With the temperatures outside low, many people like to take hotter showers to warm up after spending time outside, putting extra strain on your hot water heater. Additionally, having family over for the holidays puts more demands on your hot water heater too, which can more easily bring to light underlying problems. If your hot water isn’t hot or your hot water heater seems very slow to regenerate hot water, call a plumber who can do hot water heater repair. It may need to be replaced but often times it can be serviced to get it working

With snow and ice that can accumulate and melt in stages throughout the winter months, there is a higher potential for water entering your basement. Sump pumps can fail if they are running more than usual to keep up with these freezing and thawing phases to pump water out. When a sump pump fails, it can allow water to flood a basement, which is why you should service your sump pump regularly and test it occasionally to ensure it will do the job it’s meant to do when it needs to do so. If your sump pump breaks, it is fairly easy to replace it. If you need help, a local plumber can get a new sump pump and replace it for you.

If you are having winter plumbing problems, call a local plumber now to get them resolved. A licensed plumber will have the tools and experience needed to resolve the issue fast. Whether it is a frozen pipe or a broken water heater, our team can help! Call us today!
