Can Handyman do Plumbing?

The question of whether a handyman can do plumbing is a difficult one to answer because the nature of a handyman role is that of a generalist rather than a specialist. So, you may very well find a handyman that has significant plumbing experience. But it is more likely that you will find that a handyman has little to no plumbing experience. The reason for this is that handymen are expected to do a little bit of everything – fixing everything from appliances to decks to pipes to wires. As a result, you may get a plumbing-inclined handyman, but you will not get a true plumber when hiring a handyman. For this reason, handymen can typically be trusted to do basic plumbing tasks like unclogging drains, repairing toilets, and replacing faucets. But more specialized plumbing tasks like cleaning out sewer lines, remodeling bathrooms, installing new sinks, putting in radiant flooring, and repairing broken pipes should be left to licensed plumbers.

Handymen are typically not insured in the same way that professional plumbers are, which can make a big difference if there are any issues while plumbing work is being done that causes home damage. In many instances, a plumber’s work is fully insured while they are in the jobsite, while a handyman’s may or may not be. Because water damage costs can add up quickly, this is an important thing to consider when choosing who you want to work on your plumbing.

Typically, if a homeowner or businessowner is asking whether a handyman can do the work it is because either they have a bunch of tasks that need to be done or they are trying to save money. Trying to find the cheapest plumbing solution is never a good idea because the kind of problems that can result from bad plumbing work can be extremely costly in the long run. However, if you have many small projects that include some light plumbing work (like putting laundry room shelving, replacing a light fixture, and connecting a new washing machine and dryer set), hiring a handyman might work out well for you. Just be sure to ask about a handyman’s plumbing experience before hiring them. Otherwise, call a local plumber to get the most experienced professionals in to do the work right the first time!
