What is Sewer Rodding?

Sewer rodding is a method that professional plumbers use to remove clogs and other water flow restrictions. Unlike a drain snake, sewer rodding works on stubborn and hard to access clogs. Professional sewer rodding works by guiding flexible rods into a pipe or drain to remove a blockage. These rods can be connected to get further into the pipe. Sewer rodding works on small and large pipes alike, ranging from sinks and showers to mainline sewer pipes. It’s best to call a professional plumber to come out and diagnose the issue to determine if you need a simple drain cleaning, or a more substantial sewer rodding service.

You may need professional sewer rodding if you have frequent sink backups or backups in your toilets, showers, or tubs. Similarly, if regular actions like flushing a toilet, running the dishwasher, or using the shower cause unexpected reactions elsewhere (like toilet water levels rising or falling, water backing up into sinks, or gurgling water in showers), you may have a sewer line blockage that requires rodding to fix. Depending on the location, a sewer line blockage can lead to waste water backing up into your home. The result is an accumulation of unsanitary, smelly black water that can put your family at risk.

Sewer rodding can also remove tree and bush roots that have grown into your sewer line, grinding them up from inside to allow water to flow normally again. If these types of blockages aren’t fixed at the earliest signs of problems, the damage they cause can compound. Homeowners that choose to ignore problems can end up needing to have sewer lines removed and replaced later, which is a much more costly fix.
