How to Get Air Out of Your Pipes

If you get sputtering when you turn on your faucets or hear gurgling, hissing, or popping when water is running, you may have air in your pipes. Typically, air can get into your pipes after you have had an interruption in service due to a power outage or the water being turned off to complete a home plumbing project. While annoying, air in your pipes is usually not too serious. The key is getting the air flushed out of your plumbing lines sooner rather than later to avoid issues down the road (like rusting and corroding pipes).

The best way to get air out of your pipes is to use water to push it out, taking advantage of the natural water flow in your home and using gravity to help. Turn off your main water supply and then locate all the faucets in your home. Start at your lowest home faucet and turn the water on (both hot and cold) to a steady trickle. Then work your way up to the highest faucet in your home. Remember, you do not want to run the water on full blast, because too much movement of water too quickly can cause a vacuum to develop, stopping water flow entirely. Instead, you simply want to get water moving everywhere where it can come out in a way that systematically push the air pockets out. Then, turn your main water supply back on to allow water to push through the system.

Once all your faucets have been running for several minutes, go ahead and shut them off and turn your attention to the other plumbing in your home. Flush each toilet and run water through your fridge’s water dispenser to get water moving to those areas as well. If you are still hearing strange noises or experiencing any plumbing issues, call a local plumber to come out and figure out what’s going on. A licensed plumber will have the experience needed to not only diagnose the issue, but get it fixed quickly the first time so you can get back to life as usual at home.
