Emergency Roto Rooting: Fast Solutions for Clogged Drains in Johnsburg

When you have a clogged drain, you want it unclogged fast! But that doesn’t mean you should pour liquid drain cleaner down there and hope for the best. These kinds of cleaners are toxic to your family and can damage your pipes. Instead, try these quick drain clog fixes on your sink, shower, or tub:

  • Hot Water – Often times drain clogs are due to grease, soap scum, and other kids of buildup that hot water can help break down. Get very hot (but not boiling) water and pour it down your drain slowly to give it a chance to break up whatever is causing your clog. You can even put a few squirts of de-greasing dish soap in your drain first and then pour the hot water down to help break up the clog further. If the water is going down at all, even if it’s moving slowly, you can repeat this several times to try to flush out the clog.
  • Baking Soda and Vinegar – The foaming reaction of baking soda and vinegar is a great way to clean a drain that has a clog where it’s hard for hot water alone to reach. If there’s no standing water in your sink, tub, or shower dump 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain and then immediately pour 1/2 cup to 1 cup of vinegar in on top to kick off the reaction. Cover the drain with a wet cloth to keep the reaction inside your drain and then wait 15-30 minutes to test the drain (or longer for a serious clog) and see if it worked. Repeat as needed if the water is still going down slowly.
  • Plunging – Don’t try to use a toilet plunger on your drain. Instead, use a small drain plunger to create a good seal over the drain and then plunge vigorously. Plunger 10-20 times before stopping and checking your progress. Once the drain has been cleared water should go down normally. Repeat rounds of plunging as needed.
  • Hair Removal Drain Tool – If you believe that hair may be a contributing factor to your clog (like in a bathroom sink or tub/shower), use a hair removal tool with little barbed “teeth” to snake the drain and pull up any hair inside so it doesn’t go down further and get past the trap. Just insert the tool into your drain and slowly, carefully fish out anything inside.
