Tips for Replacing an Undermount Sink

If your kitchen sink is getting old and worn out, looks outdated, or has broken, it’s time to install a new kitchen sink. Use these plumber’s tips for installing a kitchen sink:

  • Measure the dimensions for your existing sink
  • Choose the right sink to replace your old sink based on aesthetics and functionality
  • Remove your old sink carefully to avoid damaging your countertops (this is often a two-person job) by detaching the plumbing components and cutting through the silicone seal with a utility knife and removing the brackets underneath
  • Prep the surface by scraping any residual adhesive off with a putty knife and cleaning it with alcohol
  • Get the sink positioned underneath where it will be mounted and then apply your silicone caulk before lifting it into its final position
  • Use clamps to hold it securely (being careful not to damage your countertop surface) while you attach the undercounter brackets
  • Leave the clamps on until the silicone is dry – usually a full day
  • Reattach plumbing (supply lines, drainpipes, garbage disposal and discharge pipe, sink trap, and drain strainer with gaskets and a flange) and test it to make sure there are no leaks

Worried about doing it yourself? Don’t fret! A licensed plumber can install a new sink for you quickly and effectively. Give a local plumber a call today have the job done for you and rest assured that the work they do is guaranteed.
