Can a Handyman Install a Water Heater?

Technically, anyone can install a water heater. If you have the tools and knowhow, you can install your own water heater. However, the best person to install a new water heater unit is a licensed plumber.

A plumber will have the expertise needed to understand which kinds of modification are needed to fit the new water heater into your space (if needed) and the experience level required to do the job right the first time. Remember, installing a water heater is the kind of job that can go terribly wrong if it goes badly. The last thing you want is to try to hire someone who is unqualified or underqualified to install a hot water tank and end up with a leak that floods your basement.

Find a nearby plumber who can install a new water heater if yours is beyond repair. They will get the new unit into your home, connect it, test it, and haul the old unit out to dispose of it in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Depending on what’s wrong with the unit though, your water heater may not necessarily need to be replaced. For instance, if your hot water isn’t hot, it may be a fixable issue like a broken thermocouple. Get a top-rated plumber to come out and investigate the issues you’re having and determine whether you need a new water heater or whether a water heater repair is possible.
