Why Do I Have Low Water Pressure?

Low water pressure can be caused by any number of things – improper pipe sizes, a slow leak somewhere, scale buildup, air in your pipes, or something else. If you have always had low water pressure, it is more likely due to a systemic plumbing issue (like your plumbing layout, pipe sizes, or types of fittings). However, if your water pressure has fallen off over time or suddenly dropped and never recovered, it is more likely due to a plumbing failure of some sort (like a leaking pipe or an aerator clog) or a cumulative plumbing problem (like buildup inside of your pipes). An experienced plumber will be able to do the diagnostic work needed to determine what the issue is and make a plan for how to fix it. If you have ever had any plumbing work done before or have previously experienced plumbing problems, this will be relevant information to provide to a plumber to help inform their diagnosis.

If you begin experiencing low water pressure suddenly during the winter, it is possible that one or more of your pipes is beginning to freeze. The best course of action would be to warm up your home and open all doors, cabinets, and heat vents to get as much warm air moving as possible to prevent a full freeze, which can not only stop your water flow entirely, but also lead to a burst pipe.
