Can a Clogged Drain Cause Low Water Pressure?

Low water pressure can be due to pipe clogs, especially in older homes where there has been more wear and tear on your pipes. The pipes themselves can break down, releasing rust and other elements into your water stream and collecting at bends, low points in your home, and inside of faucets. As a result, the water will run more slowly past buildup because instead of flowing freely it must go around it.  If you have hard water, this can happen more quickly because the water itself can leave behind sediment like lime and calcium deposits as well, causing a crusty or gunky buildup. However, even with soft water, sand and dirt and other sediment can still get into your pipes, causing buildup and resulting in clogs. Algae can also occur in the pipes of older homes or in pipes flowing with high mineral content water.

If your water pressure is low and seems to be getting worse over time, this is usually a telltale sign that you have clogged pipes causing problems. Unfortunately, once buildup begins, many homeowners opt to dump drain cleaner down their drains to help their pipes. This is not a good idea because breaking up a clog to restore water pressure may not work that effectively because pieces can break off, causing additional clogging further down the line. And even where it “does work” it can do irreparable damage to your pipes, weakening them and making them more likely to break over time.

Call a local plumber to identify the root cause of your low water pressure and advise on how best to solve the problem. A licensed plumber will be able to tell you if your clogs can be removed safely or if a section of your pipe should be replaced. Remember, plumbers have professional tools that they can use to remove clogs safely so you can avoid paying for more substantial plumbing repair later on.
