Can Tree Roots Damage PVC Pipes?

While PVC pipes are not nearly as susceptible to root damage as clay pipes, they can still be penetrated by roots. PVC pipes typically have fewer fittings and the fittings that they do have tend to be tighter and remain better sealed over the years. However, any escape of moisture can lure plant, shrub, and tree roots towards it, especially in drought conditions. This means that any leaking pipe, regardless of the material, can be infiltrated by roots. Once roots find a way in, they can cause big problems, growing quickly inside of plumbing lines and clogging pipes as grease and other debris gets caught on them.

Low water pressure and slow draining are key signs of root damage in pipes. If your house was built before 1995, you likely have at least some measure of underground plumbing damage because the clay and steel pipes that used to be used for home construction naturally break down faster over time than the concrete and PVC pipes that are used today. If you suspect that your pipes have root damage, call a top-rated plumber sooner rather than later to have someone come take a look. Unfortunately, these types of problems only compound over time. Don’t ignore your plumbing problems because you’re bound to end up with a much costlier fix later. Professional plumbers have ways to remove roots from your pipes in a way that doesn’t necessarily need to disrupt your yard or landscaping. Trust a local plumber to advise on the best way to address your plumbing problems.
