Common Reasons for Sink Repair

Plumbers fix all kinds of sink problems for homeowners every day, so they’ve already seen everything that you might throw at them. From the mundane to the truly bizarre, your local plumber has likely fixed the very same problem that you’re having right now. So, if you’re wondering what the most common problems are that people typically experience at home, here’s our most common lineup of sink issues:

Leaks

dripping faucet or supply pipe is the probably most common reason that a plumber is called to fix a kitchen or bathroom sink. Whether your faucet needs to be fixed or replaced or your pipes need to be repaired, a local plumber has the tools and expertise needed to diagnose the leak and stop it from the source.

Slow Draining

A slow draining sink is the precursor to a clogged sink. Don’t wait until your sink is clogged to get help. Too many homeowners think that a slow draining sink isn’t a big deal. They want to ignore the problem or downplay its severity. However, once a sink is fully clogged, it is often more difficult (and hence more costly) to have it fixed. Using a liquid drain cleaner is a poor solution to fixing a slow draining sink because it uses harsh chemicals to do the same job that a plumber can do with tools. These chemicals are harmful to both people and the pipes themselves – causing burns to skin and weakening the structural integrity of the pipes. Over time their use can cause brittle, thin, and weak pipes that increase the likelihood of serious leaks and collapse.

Clogs

A clogged sink is a major problem – rendering it useless. If you have a clogged kitchen sink or clogged bathroom sink, lean on a professional plumber to remove the clog for you. Many of the approaches that homeowners use to try to remove a clog themselves can actually make the problem much worse – driving the clog deeper into the pipe or compacting the blockage, making it harder remove later on. An experienced plumber can assess the problem and recommend the best approach for removing the clog –roto rooting, hydro jetting, or drain cleaning.

Reduced Water Pressure

Low water pressure in a single sink is usually the result of a clogged aerator. An aerator can get clogged when minerals are present in the water and they build up over time. Hard water is particularly difficult on sink components because calcium, lime scale, and rust can form on the small parts that make up a sink faucet. Fortunately, unclogging an aerator is an easy fix. Unscrewing it and cleaning it out usually restores water flow immediately. If the aerator is damaged or badly clogged, a new one may need to be installed, but these are very inexpensive and relatively easy to find.

However, if water pressure is low elsewhere in your home, a leak or other more serious plumbing problem may be the cause. An experienced plumber can determine what is causing your low water pressure and take the steps required to fix the issue right away. Even if a pipe needs to be repaired or replaced, the work can usually be done as a same-day job, remedying the water pressure issue in no time at all.

Broken Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal that makes noises, fails to break down food effectively, or won’t turn on is a problem that requires a plumber. While a broken garbage disposal is not usually an emergency situation, it is still frustrating. Don’t live with a garbage disposal that doesn’t work – call a top-rated plumber to get it fixed or replaced so you can use your kitchen sink normally again.
