How to Stop Roots Growing into Pipes

Pipes are very appealing to roots because they have water and oxygen, which help plants grow. Sewer lines are even more appealing because they also contain fertilizer. Fast growing plants, bushes, and trees’ roots will seek out sewer lines, making them especially dangerous.

The best way to prevent roots growing in your pipes is to plant slower growing varieties in your yard and keep them spaced as far away from sewer lines as possible. The general rule of thumb is to keep them 10-15 feet away from underground lines. While this is great advice for homeowners that are building their homes on empty, undeveloped land, this is often not a practical piece of advice for homeowners buying preexisting homes, or those that planted landscaping based only on aesthetics.

For pipes that already have roots penetrating them, there are many different options for removing growth that is blocking existing sewer lines. Hydro jetting, sewer rodding, and trenchless pipe repair are all ways to remove pesky roots from sewer lines to get your plumbing flowing normally again. Each of these solutions is a great option for homeowners that want to avoid the cost and damage of having pipes and nearby landscaping dug up in their yards.

While there are a variety of liquid root remover solutions available in the market, any of these can cause pipe weakening and corrosion just like liquid drain cleaners meant for sinks. Professional plumbers do not recommend these types of “quick fixes” because they typically result in more problems (and even more costly pipe repairs) later on.
