What Do I Need to do for Sump Pump Maintenance?

Cleaning your sump pump occasionally is always a good idea. To clean out your sump pump, unplug it and remove it from the sump pit, wrap it in plastic to prevent dripping on your flooring, and then take it outside to clean it off with a hose or pressure washer on a very low setting. Clean it off with water and remove any buildup and then replace it back in its original location and plug it back in. If you find any salt or scale buildup, keep in mind that these harsh water conditions may be taking a toll on your sump pump. Hard water, sediment, and other particulate matter can add wear and tear to your sump pump, shortening its lifespan.

Regularly maintaining your sump pump can extend its life and allow it to run more effectively when it’s needed. If you live in a wetter area, your sump pump will likely run more frequently, creating an even bigger need for ongoing maintenance.

However, if your sump pump is running constantly, this isn’t normal. A sump pump that runs too often is either a sign that something isn’t working properly with your sump pump setup or that the sump pump is undersized for your needs. A basic sump pump may be too small or too weak to handle homes with more demanding water pump out needs. A licensed plumber can determine if the sump pump model that came installed in your home is the best match for your needs. Ask your local plumber to advise on your sump pump and help determine if there’s a better model to be used in your home.
