What are Frozen Pipe Symptoms?

If the only plumbing symptom that you have is reduced water flow from a shower, sink, or kitchen faucet , that’s a great sign! That means your pipe is only partially frozen. This kind of freeze is a lot easier to fix than a complete freeze that blocks all water flow. But if you turn on a faucet and there’s no water or you flush the toilet and no water enters your toilet, that is a bigger problem. These are clear signs of a frozen pipe somewhere in your home.

Bad smells can also signal a frozen pipe because if sewage can’t move past a frozen clog, it will back up – forcing foul smells into your home or business. Typically, these smells are accompanied by other frozen pipe symptoms as well though like reduced water flow and suspicious looking pipes.

Do a visual inspection of any pipes that are exposed to see if you notice anything amiss. If you see a pipe covered in frost or bulging, that is a clear sign of a frozen pipe. And any pipe that has lost its original shape (bulging outward, bent, twisted, etc.) is likely broken, which means when it gets thawed, water will start leaking from it unless you have turned the water off.

If you look around and can’t figure out which pipe is to blame for your plumbing issues, give a local plumber a call. We service the greater Chicago area, providing an experienced team to fix commercial and residential plumbing problems of all sizes. We will work hard to find the frozen pipe, get it thawed out, and repair any damage that has occurred.
