Dripping Tap Fix from The Pros

A dripping tap is not just annoying. It can also waste water, driving up your water bill. (And if the water dripping is on the hot water side, it can also drive up your gas or electric bill because it will keep your water heater running even when you aren’t actively using water.) For these reasons, it’s important to address a dripping faucet once you notice it instead of just ignoring it.

If your faucet is dripping, any number of things can be causing the leak. First you will need to figure out which side is leaking. Turn off the cold water from beneath the sink. If it stops, the cold water side is what is leaking. If the faucet is still leaking, you will know that the hot water side is what is leaking. Leave the side that is leaking turned off and let any residual water in the line run out. Then close the drain stopper and put a towel down inside the sink to protect it while you work (you don’t want to scratch or chip the sink).

The easiest fix is a worn down aerator. This is quick and inexpensive to fix even without any plumbing knowledge. Unscrew the aerator to take it off and check it for obvious signs of wear or a clog. Once you have the aerator and any other parts surrounding it removed, lay them out in the order you took them off and take a picture, so you know how they went in there in the first place. Then look for any identifying information on them (part number, brand, size, etc.) to know what to get to replace them. Go to a nearby hardware store to get replacement parts or order them online (depending on how quickly you need the faucet fixed). You may want to consider ordering a new kit or cylinder instead of just a single gasket, washer, or aerator to avoid future problems with other components in the faucet. Once you get the new parts, follow the provided instructions to get them installed and then turn on the sink to test whether the drip is fixed. If your tap is still dripping, you may need to remove the handle to access the cartridge underneath and replace that as well.

Still have a dripping tap? Call a local plumber to come out and fix the issue for you. A licensed plumber will be able to troubleshoot what may be causing the issue and help you understand whether you have a crack or some other kind of failure that can’t be fixed. If you do end up needing to replace your faucet, a plumber can do that work as well.
