Chicago Sump Pump Replacement: How to Choose the Right Model

When your sump pump has broken and you need a replacement, do your homework so you know which model is best for your home’s needs. Otherwise, you may end up with a model that’s undersized for your home and more likely to fail again in the future. In fact, your existing sump pump failure may be due to it being incorrectly sized for your home or improperly installed the first time. Don’t make the same mistake again!

Here’s what you need to know about replacing your sump pump:

Specs – Your new sump pump should fit comfortably in your sump pump pit. Measure the pit diameter to determine how big your new sump pump should be. Then, check the pipe discharge size to ensure your pump is compatible with your pipes. Lastly, check the height of your discharge pipe outside. The taller this height is, the more powerful your sump pump motor will need to be to get water up and out of the pit. For lifts of more than 10 feet you’ll probably want to go with a 1/2 HP unit, and for lifts of more than 15 feet, you’ll probably want to go with a 3/4 HP unit.

Capacity – If your old sump pump never seemed to keep up, or struggled to do the job, you likely need a more powerful sump pump than the one you had before. Homes that have water entering their sump pump pit frequently will need a stronger sump pump to meet this higher level of demand. That typically means you need either a 1/2 HP unit or a 3/4 HP unit, although large homes in areas prone to heavy flooding might need as much as a 1 HP unit.

Power – If you live in a place that’s prone to power outages, you should consider getting a model that can run on battery backup to ensure it will keep working even when storms have knocked out power.
