What Tools Are Needed for Drain Cleaning?

The tools that you’ll need for drain cleaning depend on what’s causing the clog and where the clog is.

If the clog is in a sink or shower drain, you’ll likely want a hair removal tool. It’s possible that your clog is caused by hair accidentally going down the drain, and this easy to use and cheap tool can sometimes fix the issue immediately. If that doesn’t work, you’ll want to try a sink plunger (which is just a down-sized version of the toilet plunger you’re already familiar with that’s meant to fit into a small sink space). These tools should be all you’ll need, but you will likely also want a towel to avoid a mess.

If the clog is in a kitchen sink, you likely won’t need the hair removal tool because there’s less likely to be hair in there. However, you’ll probably want to check your garbage disposal before working on cleaning out the drain. It’s possible that the slow draining or backup of water that you’re experiencing is because of a garbage disposal jam or failure. In this case, you may need actual tools to take it apart and check its components to see if anything internally has broken. Your specific model will determine which kind of wrench you’ll need – consult the manual for more information or look online for information that’s specific to your garbage disposal.

Whatever you do, do not pour drain cleaner down the drain regardless of how many other things you’ve tried already. Drain cleaner is not a safe solution because even if it can remove the clog, it can also damage the inside of your pipes. And if it doesn’t work, you’ll end up with dangerous chemicals sitting in your sink or shower and pipes, making it harder to safely work on clog removal afterwards. Instead, call a local plumber to come out and help.
