Why Do I Have a Smelly Drain?

If your drain smells, you have something funky sitting down in there.

In a bathroom this is likely bacteria growth due to things like old spit and toothpaste and grease lingering in your pipes. Serratia marcescens (typically referred to as just Serratia) is a slimy pink stuff that forms in bathtubs, sinks, and toilets that are not cleaned as often as they should be.  This is just one kind of bacteria that can form, but molds and mildews can smell as well. Molds and mildews have a distinctly dirty earthy smell and can cause allergy symptoms to flair up.

In a kitchen bad smells are usually due to food that has gone down the drain and is now decaying. If you have a garbage disposal, it is possible that the food has gotten stuck inside and wasn’t ground up and passed through like it should have been. Rotting food smells unmistakably terrible.

If you have either of these smells, call a plumber to get your drain cleaned out so you don’t need to keep smelling these foul odors. A licensed plumber will have the tools needed to work on your drains, removing any obstructions and cleaning out any lingering funkiness.
