How to Fix a Leaky Kitchen Sink

Sometimes when homeowners report a “leaking kitchen sink” they are referring to the sink itself leaking underneath, and other times they simply mean that the faucet is dripping. While both are problems, they have very different fixes. If you call a local plumber, be as specific as possible when describing the issue. A plumbing company will send someone out to address your specific issue and get your kitchen sink back to good working order quickly.

If water is found under or around the kitchen sink a cracked pipe or loose fitting is likely the issue. Turning off the water will allow the space and time needed to investigate the issue effectively. Once the water has been turned off, try to visually identify the source of the leak before doing anything else. If there is an obvious crack the broken section will need to be replaced. A loose component can be tightened with a plumber’s wrench and sealed off with plumber’s putty. A bucket should be placed under a broken pipe, rubber washer, or fitting before removing it to catch any lingering water. Take the broken component to your local hardware store for help finding a replacement part.

If your kitchen sink faucet is leaking, you will likely have to disassemble the faucet and inspect each internal component for a failure. Turn off the water to the sink and place a towel in the sink to keep anything from dropping down the drain or scratching the sink bowl while you are working. As you take the faucet apart keep notes or take pictures with your phone of how everything went together initially so that you can get it back together afterwards. The most common culprits for a leaking kitchen faucet are seals, rubber o rings, and gaskets that have been weakened or broken over time. If one of these is to blame, it will need to be replaced. But the good news is that the part is likely inexpensive if you can find the right one at a hardware store or online. In other cases, a corroded or blocked piece may to be blame for the leak by causing water flow to be diverted from its usual path. In some cases, the part may be able to be cleaned, and on other cases it may need to be replaced. While it never hurts to try to fix up the existing parts in your sink, you won’t know if the leak has been remedied until you put the faucet back together and test it. This can become a tedious task if you have several parts to work on and test because you may end up putting the sink back together and taking it apart again numerous times. However, calling a professional plumber can eliminate this annoyance. An experienced plumber can investigate the cause of your leaky kitchen sink and get the problem fixed quickly and professionally.
