Why do I have a Clogged Drain?

Ask any experienced plumber what’s the strangest thing they’ve ever found in a pipe and they’ll probably have some pretty interesting stories to tell you. Plumbers have seen it all!

So, when you ask, “What’s causing my drain to clog?” The answer could really be anything! However, these are the most common reasons for a clogged drain:

  • Hair
  • Biodegradable products (toilet paper, tissues, etc.)
  • Personal products (toothpaste, hair products, soap residue, makeup, etc.)
  • Natural sediment (mud, sand, etc.)
  • Mineral buildup
  • Hardened grease
  • Waste
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Dropped items (cell phones, keys, dog toys, kids’ toys, etc.)

If you don’t know what caused the clog, do not try to force the blockage further into the pipe by plunging or sticking anything down the drain. This can cause an item that cannot be broken up to be pushed further into the pipe, increasing the difficulty (and therefore cost) or removing it later. Instead, call a local plumber to come investigate the issue and get it resolved.

When a nearby plumber comes out, be sure to give them relevant information like what you have done so far to try to remove the clog, what you suspect might be the culprit, and whether this has happened before. This is all critical information, especially if you have poured anything down the drain already. The last thing you want is to have your plumber unexpectedly get splashed with drain cleaner or bleach while trying to remove your clog. Remember, a clogged toilet, sink, or tub isn’t usually a plumbing emergency, so even if the problem arises after hours, you don’t need to panic. You likely can wait until regular business hours to get someone out to deal with your drain clog. Let a plumber nearby unclog your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room drain.
