Undermount Sink Installation Considerations

Installing an undermount sink requires a bit more forethought than an above-counter sink or drop-in sink because of the space requirements required to do so. However, most bathroom sink installations are pretty straight forward because they tend to be more uniformly sized. Kitchen sinks, on the other hand, can vary a lot in their dimensions.

Some undermount kitchen sinks are deeper and that can affect whether they can accommodate a garbage disposal based on what else you have in the space underneath. Additionally, some under-counter kitchen sinks are wider, which may make them too big for your space once you add on the room needed to attach the mounting brackets. (However, it is not advised to change out the recommended or provided mounting brackets for smaller ones due to space restraints. Doing so can result in damage to your counter or your sink or allow water to leak along the seal because it is not tightly attached.) Ensuring you have enough space for the sink of your choosing and any add-ons like a garbage disposal is the first thing to consider when choosing a sink. Remember, if you currently use the area under your sink for storage or to house things like a water purification system, you will need to take these space demands into consideration as well when putting in a new sink.

The other major consideration is where your plumbing lines are located relative to the sink. Each sink is a little bit different in terms of the plumbing line needs and locations. Minimizing the space between the hole in your sink and your water line under the sink is important for ensuring optimal water flow, especially when using a garbage disposal as well because lengthy supply line tubing or lengthened pipe sections can result in problems down the road as these components age.

Lastly, you will need to consider aesthetics and desired functionality when installing a kitchen sink. For instance, if you like the look and utility of having a sink with an extendable faucet head sprayer, you will need to make sure that there is enough room for the added tubing beneath your counter, otherwise, you run the risk of getting it tangled on other plumbing components during regular use.

If you still have questions about what kind of sink you should install, ask a professional. Kitchen design companies can help you pick something that fits your needs and budget. And once you have the sink you want, hire a plumber to do the sink installation for you to ensure it gets done right the first time without any damage to your countertops.  A licensed plumber will have the tools and experience necessary to get a new kitchen sink installed without any problems so you can get back to enjoying your kitchen more quickly.
