Do Pipes Clog More in the Winter?

Many different things can cause plumbing clogs – hair, food debris, grease, sediment, scale buildup, roots, toilet paper, and even frozen water. There are as many different types of clogs as there are types of pipes, and while some may not have any connection to the weather, others certainly do. For instance, you’re typically not going to find frozen pipes on a balmy sunny day in July. For most types of clogs, they are going to be more prevalent in the winter.

Frozen water blockages increase in the winter because the temperatures are lower. Grease clogs increase in the winter because oil and grease harden when they cool and the rapid cool down that grease experiences flowing into a cold pipe can cause speedy thickening, clogging pipes. Sediment and scale clogs are also somewhat vulnerable to the weather because cold water is less likely to help wash this kind of buildup away than warm water would.

While hair, food debris, and toilet paper aren’t intrinsically related to the weather, the added pressure on your home’s plumbing to accommodate friends and family during the holiday months can potentially lead to increased blockages from these items as well.

For these reasons, yes clogs tend to happen more in the winter. If you have a clogged pipe or are dealing with recurring clogs, give us a call.
