Why is My Water Pressure Suddenly So Low?

The good news is that if your water pressure is suddenly reduced, it is typically an easier fix than if you just have ongoing low water pressure (especially if it keeps getting worse). Read on to find out what the cause of a sudden loss of water pressure could be:

If you suddenly have low water pressure, the first thing you should check is what other people in your house are doing. It’s possible that the low water pressure is just a result of a lot of water being used at once. For example, if you are in the shower and the water suddenly dips, it may just be that someone has flushed a toilet, started the dishwasher or washing machine, or that your sprinkler system turned on. This is normal. No matter how much water pressure you have regularly, you will always have a drop in pressure to some degree when water is being called for in multiple areas all at once. And if multiple things are happening at the same time, that can really cause a drop on water pressure! That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong, but it can be frustrating.

If nothing else was happening when you lost water pressure, it’s important to figure out if you have less water pressure everyone, or just in some areas of your home. If the sink where you were washing your hands only has a trickle of water coming out now, but every other sink in your home seems fine (make sure to check them individually – turning off one before trying another one), then you can determine that the issue is specifically with that sink. Try taking the aerator off to see if it is blocked.

If the water pressure seems more widespread, listen and look for signs of a leak, which would include a hissing sound, puddling along baseboards and furniture, bubbling paint, or darkening drywall. If you suspect that you have a pipe leak, turn off your water right away and call an emergency plumber to come out and fix the issue.
