Do All Plumbers Do Sump Pump Plumbing?

Sump pumps require a few components to work: a sump pit, the sump pump itself, and an available outlet to provide power for it to run. When it comes to the plumbing components of connecting pipe to drain water that a sump pump pulls out of the pit, any local plumber can do this work. However, individual plumbers can vary on whether they are able to dig out the sump pit. For this reason, some plumbers will only do sump pump repairs or sump pump replacements, and not new sump pump installations. When a sump pump is being installed for the first time, or a homeowner is switching from one type of sump pump to another, there may be electrical considerations that need to be addressed as well. If this is the case, an electrician will need to be brought in to handle those elements.

When a sump pump breaks, your local plumber will be able to tell you whether sump pump repair work can be done, or whether the unit needs to be replaced. While sump pumps do a big job, they don’t actually have that many parts that can fail, which makes repair work on them less common than replacing them with a newer model. The most common failure is a burnt-out sump pump motor, which can’t be fixed. Keep in mind, if your sump pump is running all the time, it is more likely to burn out the motor, which makes proper sump pump maintenance all the more important.
