How Long does it Take to Unfreeze Pipes?

The length of time it takes for frozen pipes to unfreeze depends on the extent of the blockage. Obviously, a fully blocked pipe will take longer to thaw than a pipe with only a partial blockage. But a pipe in a colder area will also take longer to thaw than a pipe in a warmer area, which is why the best strategy for unfreezing your pipes is to warmup the pipe itself and the area around it as well. If you are trying to thaw a pipe in an unheated area (like if you have lost power), you will certainly be at the job longer than under more ideal circumstances. Roughly speaking though, it typically takes about 30-40 minutes to thaw a frozen pipe.

Remember though, if the temperature is 20 degrees or less and you don’t do anything to warm up the area or keep water moving, the pipe can easily refreeze. Don’t do all the hard work of thawing a pipe only to let it freeze again later. Wrapping problem pipes with an insulating material can help protect them when temperatures dip.

And, if you’ve been working at it for a while and your pipe still appears to be frozen, call a local plumber to come out a take a look. You may have other plumbing issues that need to be addressed. Our team services the greater Chicago area, so we have lots of experience with frozen pipes and the damage they cause. Give our emergency plumbers a call today – day or night – and we can help you out!
