Signs Your Aurora Shower Needs Replacement, Not Just Repair

The main reason you would need to replace a shower is if the waterproofing membrane underneath has failed. Surface problems like caulk, grout, tiling, and fixtures can typically be replaced for far less than the cost of replacing the shower itself.

Here are some clear signs that you’re looking at shower replacement rather than shower repair:

  • Persistent leaking – If water keeps appearing on the flooring outside of the shower or along the baseboards, you likely have a shower leak that will require a replacement.
  • Soft flooring or walls in the bathroom – If your bathroom flooring or walls near the shower are soft, spongy, or cold to the touch, that also indicates leaking coming form your shower.
  • Recurring mold or mildew – Surface mold or mildew that returns shortly after cleaning (specially in corners or along the floor pan) it usually means moisture is trapped behind your shower somewhere.
  • Cracking or warping – Cracks or warping in a shower’s fiberglass or acrylic typically signal that a replacement is needed because it has worn out over time. This is most typical of units that are 15+ years old, although newer showers can sometimes give out in this way as well.
  • Flexing shower flooring – Flooring that flexes when you step on it or feels bouncy when moving around can indicate slow leaking underneath.
  • Staining on the ceiling of the room underneath – A red/orange/brownish water stain on the ceiling underneath where your shower is located is a clear sign that water is leaking from your shower. Sometimes this can be fixed, like if it’s from a fixture with a broken seal, but it often points to the need for a new shower.
